CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Charlie

Under a blanket on the sofa, she curled up by the gas fire in the living room, watching Daniel across the open room in the kitchen washing dishes. He had found some leftovers for Rob and Simon. She had nibbled bites of bread. It made her stomach finally stop cramping so she ate the leftover roasted potatoes Daniel warmed for her next.

Simon took Rob back to the gym for his car. Not before Rob gave her a big hug. “I love you so much, mi prima. Have a great time.” Kissing her cheek, he had whispered in her ear, “And I want fuckin’ details.”

“I love you too, fucker. Beyond words,” she said, safe in his embrace.

Charlie thanked Simon too, apologizing for scaring the hell out of him.

“Please don’t apologize, marm,” he said, smiling at the hug she offered him. “I’ve dealt with worse when Daniel and his mates get plastered.”

“Oi!” Daniel had shouted in protest. “When’s the last time I got plastered?”

Now they were alone. Daniel came over to sit with her on the sofa, gesturing to her empty plate. “What else can I get you?”

“I’m fine, thank you.” She scooted over, making room for him. “I’m sorry for everything. To be so much trouble today.”

It hadn’t escaped her. How he didn’t flinch. How he seemed to thrive caring for her. But still, would he want to risk repeats? Did he have second thoughts about their trip?

He curled up next to her, pulling some of the blanket over him too. “Don’t worry. I’ll be posting you a bill in the morning.” Tilting his head, he played with her hair. “Excessive water use.”

His tender joke made her smile, and it only made her feel more guilty. “I don’t remember anything that happened between fast feet with you and waking up in your shower. But I know it was a lot. I’ll understand if it scared the shit out of you. If you want to run away screaming, here’s your chance.”

“No matter how hard you try, you can’t push me away, remember?” He twirled her lock of hair around his finger. “But Charlie, can I ask you some questions?”

“Can you pour me a drink first, please?” She’d need it for where this was going. “Something strong and neat.”

“I’ll make two.” He patted her leg before getting up, heading toward the bar at the edge of the kitchen. “I have a nice bottle of Michter’s 10 Year Elaine gave me for Christmas.” He opened it, pouring them both two fingers worth.

He handed Charlie her drink and sat back down, tucking them under the blanket. She turned sideways on the sofa, wedging her feet under his warm legs.

He smiled. “Do you need another blanket?”

“No, I like you keeping me warm.” She raised her glass. “You can ask me anything, Daniel. It’s okay. No more secrets.” She took her first sip.

He took a few moments, staring at the ceiling, then he asked, “Who is Kai?”

She took another sip, letting it coat her sore throat.
